The Walt Disney Era

Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his childhood years on a farm near Marceline, Missouri. From an early age, he showed a deep interest in drawing and art. After serving in the American Red Cross in France during World War I, Walt Disney returned to the US in 1920 and formed a company called "Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists" along with Ub Iwerks (Iwerks), a cartoonist. Unfortunately, this venture proved a failure and both Walt Disney and Iwerks were had to take up jobs at the Kansas City Film Ad Corporation, where they developed animated advertisements for local movie houses. In 1922, Walt Disney founded his first studio called Laugh-O-Grams Inc., to make short cartoon films based on fairy tales and children's stories.

Though these were popular in the local area, this venture also failed. Walt Disney then moved to Hollywood, California, and started the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, along with his elder brother Roy Sr., in their uncle's garage in 1923.

Their first distribution deal was for 'Alice Comedies', a cartoon series based on a short live action/animation film called 'Alice's Wonderland'⁹ that Walt Disney had made at Laugh-O-Gram. The company started to do well as the brothers complemented each other. While Walt Disney was the creative force, Roy Sr. took charge of the financial operations of the company.

At the instance of Walt Disney, the company's name was changed to Walt Disney Studio (WDS) in 1926. After completing the 'Alice Comedies' series in 1927, Walt Disney decided to do an all-cartoon series 'Oswald the Lucky Rabbit', based on a character.
